Consumer
Confidence, Expectations Plunge
Consumers' expectations about the economy dropped to 47.9 percent in March, down from 58.0 percent in
February. The March reading, based on survey respondents' outlook for business conditions over the next six months, was the lowest since 1973.
The expectations index is part of the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which fell to a five-year low
of 64.5 percent in March. Rising unemployment and inflation fears helped lower the index from 76.4 percent in February.
Rising costs of food and gas, along with falling prices in the real estate and stock markets, have people
altering spending plans and cutting expenses.
Tennessee Ranked No. 3 in Economic Development
Tennessee is third in the nation for economic development in 2007, according to a ranking by Site
Selection magazine. The state received the No. 3 spot because it began nearly 300 new industrial projects last year that either had a capital
investment of $1 million or more, created at least 50 new jobs or involved the creation of at least 20,000 square feet of new floor area.
Four Tennessee cities landed on the magazine's top 10 metro list, more than any other state.
Nashville-Murfreesboro ranked sixth for metro areas of more than one million, Knoxville came in 10th for metros between 200,000 and
one million, and Morristown ranked second and Johnson City fourth in the 50,000 to 200,000 category.
In its 30th year of awarding the rankings, Site Selection is the oldest publication in the
corporate real estate and economic development field.
